I depends.
If you have light curtains, they wont block out much sunlight. And if you have dark curtains the room will be darker. (better for sleeping)
Dark to block out the light.
depends on ho wmuch you like the light...& which direction the sun hits your room.if your room is really dark i would go with light & vice versa

It depends on the color of your room. If you go darker, find something like a transparent curtain for the center so you can pull the darker ones up...
Well it all depends on the theme of the bedroom.
If the bedspread is: Pink, light purple, light blue, orange, bright red, white, light gray, yellow, or anything bright or light, go with light curtains.
If the bedspread is: black, gray, dark gray, navy blue, maroon, brown, burnt orange, or any dark color, go with dark curtains.
You might also want to make sure everything is matching.
Example: Dark curtains and bedspread; dark wood for the dresser.

I like a dark room to sleep in, so I have black-out curtains plus shades! for me, dark curtains.
at my other house, I had white curtains but behind them where no one could see them were my black-out curtains.
you should have whatever you like.
Whatever colour you like light or dark. If you are a night worker or want to lie in on a sunny morning then use blackout curtain linings. they are not black in colour as you might think but they do make the bedroom nice and dark.
I would put a blind first this way you can put any colour or type of fabric that you wish . If you don't like blinds you can always use a lining underneath the curtains to darken the room.

Light, check out Country Curtains Catalog, they have curtains that block out the sun and a selection of sizes/styles. No they are not cutesy. The light will give the room a spacious feeling but much depends on the color of your walls and room size. Look through magazines.
I don't like curtains. I like blinds. I have dark blinds with a design on them in my bedroom. It keeps the sun out in the morning if I want(I can always raise them).They have a neat look, are inexpensive and actually make my bedroom look larger.
