Can new laminate be installed over the top of an existing laminated countertop?
Question:The existing countertop is probably 50-60 years old, with many scratches and a few pits, but otherwise in good shape structurally. There is a seam in one area that has sort of "bloomed" up a little, but isn't really peeling. I just thought this might be a less expensive solution than replacing the whole countertop. Dimensions are approx. 28" x 20'.

In some cases you can. Here is an interesting article:

you can actually remove the old laminate and adhere new laminate over the existing structure...I also know Sears will come and put new "fronts" or "skins" on your cabinets, so I'm sure they can do laminate over laminate.
no good to put over it.
Yes, but you need to fill all pits and sand that seam so it is smooth. Any seams or holes left will show through the new laminate.
Sure. You will have to fix the bloomed up area first to make it "rock solid" and flat. If that means belt sanding, sand. Just don't pry it up. "Maybe" use big headed nails(like roofing nails for ashhalt shingle) and nail it flat. I say maybe because it depends on the countertop. Looking from the underside, you should be able to tell whether it is particle board or plywood. I am thinking ply.which is better to hold nails. You may need to predrill the laminate first so that the nail does not break it as it passes thru.
The closer your surface is to perfectly flat, the better. The original laminate is holding, so the new will just piggyback on the original.
