Why do painters wear white clothes to paint in?

They were originally designed from unbleached, undyed cotton because it was inexpensive and more of a disposable article of clothing for the cost invested then. This was back when there were uniforms and outfits for many types of jobs where most people now wear regular clothes.
That way they can get dirty so it looks like their hard workers. lol. No I heard many reasons for that, but I think the one that makes most sence to me is that white is the most common color people use to paint, therefore they wear white so if they spill white on white you can't notice. But many painters now a days just wear regular old dirty clothes instead of the white.

because it the cheapest kind of suit to buy. plus, if you are old school, you feel that you paint Marks add a certain mark of hard work.
My theory is that if they have white clothes on and they are mixing colors and want to see how the color will look on white...voila! They just swipe the brush across the pant leg... hmmm... sounds reasonable to me.
Also it could be that their wives outfitted them in white so that she could tell if he had actually been working that day. If he came home with no new colors added to the coverall, then chances were that he wasn't painting someone's den but was probably playing house with someone.

My guess is that once the original substance is removed like the paint or the sauce, or the blood, you still have stain...which may or may not be the substance, just a residual pigment from the substance. So with white, you can just bleach it...which is one of the reasons why these garments are so heavy duty as well, so they don't get eaten up with bleach right away.
It also stands to reason that these clothes are no frills, and cheaper to produce with no dyes or design on them, and no one cares because they just get messed up anyway. But the look, while it was a more official uniform a long time ago has long since been replaced for some professionals by other clothing. Painters wear raggedy clothes, docs wear scrubs, etc. I think chefs in prestigious restaurants still wear their coat but not many cooks dress in white anymore either.
There are other things like bath towels, kitchen linens in fancy restaurants, etc that are often white and see a lot of action. When it comes to matters of sanitation in these items, I think people want white because they KNOW if it isn't clean because they can see the stains. So they know to wash it again, and this would be safer.
