Answers:
LOL, welcome to my world! Get furnishings that are double duty! There are some manufacturers that make sofas and chairs where the cushions lift up and there is storage underneath. Take advantage of odd places, like the upper parts of walls. In my tiny kitchen I put shelves up about 16 inches from the ceiling all the way around where there aren't cabinets and placed all my small kitchen appliances (bread machine, mixers, blender, crock pots, etc) as well as large serving and mixing bowls. I like the look, the stuff is handy with my step stool that I keep in the gap between the fridge and wall. I put a shelf about 12 inches below that one and have all my pantry goods there. The look is somewhat like an old fashioned general store, but it works with my decor. In the bathroom over the toilet you can hang a small wine rack and roll up the towels and store them there, along with some magazines, soaps, extra rolls of TP. Jump outside the box and see new uses for objects! As far as color, there are no real rules, use what you like!
Addition: Oh, I just realised something too! My pots and pans and big untensils are hanging from cup hooks I screwed into the underside of the bottom shelf! LOL, it took me walking in and out of the kitchen a half dozen times before I remembered this and wanted to share it too!
Light colors are best. No dark floors, cabinets, counters, window coverings, etc. Low profile furniture, contemporary style is always clean and non cluttery looking. If you can afford it , get a flat screen tv that you can install on the wall; you'll be amazed how much space you save by not having a TV with a stand and huge cabinet behind it. Keep as little on the walls as possible; just a few simple pieces, not sets of pictures or huge paintings. Have fun.
Think all white and think IKEA.
