How do i get rid of white patches/marks on internal red brick.?

Question:We have a red brick fireplace and archway in our front room.
These marks have developed over the years and are slowly getting worse.Has anyone any suggestions on how to get rid of them ?

Answers:
It's lime leaching out of the brick. Go to a mason supply and they'll give you a compound that will neutralize it.

The attached describes a home made cleaner.

It's minerals and salt coming out of the bricks. You can get a clear sealant to paint onto them from any builders outlet or DIY place.
its lime out or the mortar paint is the only way.
this is caused from salt in the brick comming to the surface. scrub it down with water it will eventually go.
put a littel bit of round up weed killer on it
its the heating drawing the salts out of the bricks (efluesence) ...washing will just draw the salts out more.
brush off ,then apply linceed oil , leave for a few weeks then seal the brickwork.
Go to your local builders merchant and ask for some BRICK ACID, brush this on and rinse off, this should neutralise the salts.
