In Australia a lot of homes have a laundry room, so that's where they keep their irons. Here in the UK I've never seen a laundry room, and people usually have their washing machine in the kitchen (!) so they might keep it in there. In Oz, I didn't have a laundry room (washing machine was in the bathroom) so I kept my iron in the airing closet. My mother in law (UK) keeps hers in the spare room and I keep mine in the little cubby hole where the phone is in the living room. It depends where there's space. But yes, I would also expect to find it next to the ironing board!

Its a tad unreasonable for her to leave you without providing all those domestic instructions.

we have an old fashioned pantry/larder thing in our house and the ironing board is stored/stuffed in there amongst the bread,beans and marmite!

I do not have a laundry room, so I put mine under the sink, but if I had a laundry room, it would be stored there.
The most logical place would be the laundry room. I keep mine in the bedroom closet, though.
