Bathroom tiling - need UK advice?
Question:I want to re-tile 3 walls of my (very small) bathroom but i have never done it before and am not sure where to start. I'm also very limited on time.
Does anyone know of any good tilers in the Leicester (UK) area?
Also - roughly how much does it cost to get someone to do it?
Answers:
Tilers aren't cheap, but they will do a good job.
You could try it yourself, but you'd need a tile cutter and possibly a diamond drill for the holes for the pipes. It is possible to do, but not for the faint-hearted.
If you're really not sure where to start better not to. Do you not have friends nearby who have had work done who could recomend someone. What about a retired releative who would come and do it for you??
Don't know about Leicester but no-one can work for less than £100 per day these days.
Probably cost a couple of hundred as good tilers are not cheap, I would suggest you get someone rather than have a go yourself as it may look bodged. Do a search in google and you may get some names from there.
Come on this is easy you could do in a weekend and look at the money you would save. If the walls are sound and there are no loose tiles, tile over the top. Cheapest as cost is go for white tiles. You could buy a number of black to make a pattern and even put in a border of black if you want. Main thing to remember is make sure you start at the bottom and work up. A piece of wood can be secured to keep rows straight when first starting. Tile adhesive to each corner and one in the middle and push into place. When complete grout. The only thing you must buy is an electric tile cutter makes it so much easier. They cost about 20 pounds and will allow you to do any cuts you need you will then have for the future.. Even easier only tile half way up the wall and then add a border.
Tilers don't come cheap, (nor can you trust them these days to do a good job) even for a small bathroom. It is cheaper for you to do it yourself. small bathroom will take 1 to 2 days at the most. Go to a tile shop and give them measurements and show them tiles you want to buy. Ask them to provide you with an estimate of how many tiles you will need for area and the grout and adhesive all separately. Check out a design you like, example, mosaic on sink side and square tiles on floor etc. Then go shop round B&Q, Homebase etc. compare prices. Get from cheapest outlet. Then to tile find centre point of A bathroom wall and start tiling, it is relatively easy. Put adhesive on each tile comb it on put on wall and level with spirit level work outwards to sides leave all cutting to end, you may need a good tile cutter depending on the quality of tiles you purchase. Cheap tiles can be scarred and snapped using match sticks under tile. Tile on floor boards with the flexible adhesive thats if you are tiling thw floor. I have tiled my bathroom and downstairs shower and downstairs toilet floor and walls. Looks great and gives me great satisfaction that I have done it myself. Even put floor and ceiling spot lights. Made a recess in wall for an alcove for mirror and glass shelving. DIY my friend it is worth it. Tilers in Leeds where I live charge £80 per hour and their work cannot be relied upon. Acually, saying all that, if you buy from TOP tiles they will give you a DVD on how to tile.
