Such a broad question!

Start with what furniture you already have, or decide on your major pieces, then go from there. I suggest painting in a simple, neutral color that is compatible. A light color will feel more spacious. If there are already carpet and/or window coverings that stay, take them into account when you purchase your furniture and paint.

Then add color in small areas, easily replaced, like pillows, lamps, area rugs, or bedspread. Try IKEA for small-scaled, inexpensive furniture and accessories.

How long? Are you doing it yourself? Do the walls need a lot of preparation, like patching? If I were doing one room, I would allow one day for prep, one day to paint (first coat in morning, second coat after lunch). Remember to protect the floor with a dropcloth. Mask windows and trim so the paint doesn't run beyond where you want it. Add time if there is lots of trim to paint. (And you need to decide if trim will be in a contrasting color or just blend in.) Then a day to move everything in. Then collapse and congratulate yourself!

depending on your age group or what you were going for, i find the best tips come from HGTV. I wouldn't recommend the major project that require buying large amounts of furniture or accesories. I have a one bedroom apartment so i only have four rooms that i had to decorate. My bedroom was my hardest because of the room's shape.

First thing i'd recommend understanding your bedroom size, where lighting will come from and how big your walls are, and where doors are located. obviously in a bedroom there is one central point of view, which should be your bed.

When I decorated my bedroom before i got any big ideas i did alot of rearranging of furniture. Understand that you will need room the pieces of furniture that belong in a bedroom, which are the bed, a night table or two, a desk and a dresser/vanity. always use the window to your advantage--for example, do you want to wake up to sunshine? do you want the window to be the point of view when you walk into the room? ext. Also use the window in the lighting scheme--pastels i find most reflect sunlight--and earthtones don't. Earthtones can be more romantic--but your furniture pieces maynot look good with earthtones. Also you can use a rug as a way of having the furniture layout feel more together. Area rugs are very cheap, and though they may look ugly on the shelf, i have one from walmart that is a dark red, and actually looks really pretty in my room. Also keep in mind that your bed sheeets/comforter needs be cohesive with the color of paint you use.

My favorite color scheme for a bedroom is beige/brown or green. I would definitely stay away from tacky colors like Pink or black (or both, haha) Brown because it tends to be cohesive with most wood furniture and pillow sets and also because it's less likely to look dirty. Also it is nuetral to other pieces in the room such as an area rug or a more impressive comforter.

Also you should consider what do you use your room for. For example, i do not uses my bedroom for much but sleeping and dressing in the morning; consequently, i do not have a TV in my bedroom. You should consider the same. TV's in the bedroom take up space, and require you do have the TV at an appropraite height and to me take up alot of room.

One you have decided a layout of furniture (remember trying tokeep either the bed or an area rug as Point of view to bring the layout togehter) you can now focus on the smaller pieces of your bedroom, such as chairs, wall set ups ext.

I've always thought symetry is beautiful. And i'm sure you've seen this beauity in decorating shows. Contrast between colors also gives balance. Brown looks good with Blue or Pink or even light Green.

Finally consider getting rid of pieces that will only clutter you room, such as movie/band posters, books that do not have a proper place, etc.

And i have found choose colors and furniture choices need to be more of a on-going bedroom plan. Pick pieces that can be moved ever few months--so that the room does not become boring. I rearrange my rooms constatly.

If you are having trouble finding pieces for your home, try Walmart, or Target--there are a few cheap pieces for you bedroom or even try your local thrift store. even if you find old furniture you can always resurface them.
