Question:I have this desk

http://www.thefurniture.com/store/images...

And its kind of scratched on top.. I was wondering if anyone has any crafty ideas of how to fix the top of the desk to make it look better?

Answers:
I saw a desk once that was painted just on the desktop portion with chaulk board paint. They used black but it also comes in green. It turned out great; I thought it was a very clever idea!

Your favorite pics and a plastic cover.

Or sponge paint is always fun.
I think that a good idea would be to put a clear glass the size of the desk on it and put pictures or anything flat under it.
Try buffing out the scratches with a furniture buffer kind of product, then paint over it, or put a clear gloss paint over it afterwards, it should blend nicely and the scatches will be less noticeable.
Contact Paper at the home/hardware store.18" wide by whatever length you need.Self-adhesive,durable.Lot... of colors and patterns.
If the desk is wood, I would simply sand down the top and refinish. This is actually a pretty easy task. just sand the scratches completely out and re-stain or paint the top. I would suggest a coat of spar urethane or similar type of clear coat to finish it off.
If its real wood just get some sand paper
(about 100 grit will do just ask the hardware guy to get it for you), and then find out what kind of wood it is , and get a stain that is close to the color of the desk maybe even darker.
I've used a darker stain and did a whole piece that turned out great.

put the stain on and wait a few seconds then wipe it off with a clean rage. repeat this until you are satisfied with the finish.

The last thing you may or may not want to do is oil finish or a polyurethane finish.
this will give your desk the face lift you want.
hmm... paint over the scratches - with contrast color ..

grey & light pink?! grey & white?! looks like old wood?

sponge ideas, seems great too-
those sponge you can easily at DIY or if you want, use your shower bath sponge- workable, too
First sand it a bit so it isn't smooth. If it has some tooth the paint will adhere better. Then use a really good primer. Bullseye makes a great one. You can ask at a hardware store for a primer for laminate (I'm guessing from the picture that that's what you're dealing with.) To do the sponge painting you're much better off with a sea sponge. It just looks better. Choose the colors you like, of course. You'll have to go by your other decor. If you want a more "natural" look, choose varying shades of brown/black for a granite like look. Use a good sealer when you are finished. Be careful not to mix water-based with oil-based. It can cause your paint to bubble.
Since it's a desk, you might also want to consider chalk board paint.
Have fun!
First try mayo. Yes, Mayo.it can remove some scratches and will definitely remove glass rings from varnished furniture.

If that doesn't work you can try steam iron with a damp ironing cloth...just enough to raise the grain. (you didn't say how the desk was finished).

Lastly, you can get wood color-matched pigment sticks at a refinishing store, rub then into the scratch and then buff out. Add a little car wax when dry for a smooth finish.
