Licensed or Unlicensed Concrete contractor?
Question:I may get some concrete work done. I see ads for Licensed and Unlicensed concrete contractor. Does it matter which one I use? and does using a Licensed contractor guarantee me of anything?
Answers:
Usually a licensed contractor will have to show several years of experience in the field and pass a test about his/her contracting knowledge. An unlicensed contractor may know nothing about the work you want done and may completely screw it up.
Also, a licensed contractor usually understands the rules of written contracts and your rights under a written contract.
Your best bet for a trouble free job is to hire a licensed contractor, put your agreement in writing and do not agree to pay the entire amount of the job until it is completely finished. Good luck!
Yes if an unlicensed contractor stiffs a supplier YOU'RE the one who get sued. If one of his workers get hurt on the job again YOU'RE on the hot seat. AND in some states you CAN'T sue an unlicensed contractor for shoddy work.
If you want it done right get a licensed contractor even if it costs more in the long run you'll be happier.
Go with licensed. That is the law, and if there is a problem you have recourse. Think, too, about liabilities, and make sure the contractor has insurance.
In theory, anyway, the licensed contractor is more skilled and accomplished, having passed an exam.
Well worth any extra money.
