Convertible Portable Dishwasher...how to install as a built-in?
Question:I have a brand new Maytag Convertible Portable Dishwasher, and my husband and I would like to redo our kitchen some day soon and make a place for a built-in dishwasher. Does any one know how to convert a dishwasher or where I can find instructions? Thanks!
Answers:
Some portable models are not meant to be installed permanently. If your model does not include the instructions in the manual, then it's probably one of those. Your best bet would be to contact Maytag directly, go to their website and contact their costumer service department for further information.
I won't be much help, but I do know that when we did this same thing once before, we had to purchase a kit from Sears to make the conversion. I would check where you purchased the dishwasher, or the Maytag website.
Our dishwasher was also a "convertible, portable".
Unless it is a front loading dishwasher, then making it a built-in unit wouldn't be suggested. You would be better off leaving a space in the counter-top, much like the stove, which matches the dimensions of the dishwasher top. If you want the top of the dishwasher to match the counter top, simply use a portion of the counter top and mount it to the dishwasher. If it is a front loader, then it will take a bit of tinkering, but you should be able to build it into you cabinetry.
In either case, you'll need to make changes to the water pipes and drain system of your sink and provide a source of electricity to operate the dishwasher. Of all these projects, the drain is going to be the most difficult. And without knowing exactly how the dishwasher discharges, I couldn't even venture a guess at how to address the problem.
When its all said and done, it might be much easier to purchase a dishwasher designed to be built into the cabinetry and sell you existing dishwasher.
