Latex or oil base paint?

Question:I'm painting a stipple ceiling. And what difference does it make which paint I use? Oil base is so messy to clean up.

Answers:
Susie. Oil based paint is no good for a ceiling anyway. Best stuff is a proper Matt Ceiling paint. Most paints these days are Acrylic anyway. Just ask your paint shop. Good Luck!

no u can use latex paint or get ceiling paint & have them tinit it... it's less drippy..

Have fun!
Use latex.
If your stipple has never been painted, or if it is raw, when you apply a latex ( which is water based ), it will mix with your stipple ( which is also water based ) and turn it to "mush". You will have to use an oil based paint or prime the ceiling first with a primer which allows you then to use a latex or an oil paint. ( Ask your paint dealer what they recommend.)
If you know your ceiling is presently painted with an oil based paint, you can again prime it ( Zinser's Bullseye 1-2-3 or equivalent will work ) and it will allow you to switch to a latex now.
Your stipple may have already been primed and painted with a latex, which of course means you can continue to repaint it in latex. Hopefully you know the existing finish on your stipple to make the correct choice. Again, rely on your paint store's guidance in determining your option.
Hope this helps.
use a flat latex...oil on a ceiling is senseless...I am a painting contractor and every ceiling have doneover 15 years has been a flat latex.
If your ceiling hasn't been painted other than it's original new paint, You will have trouble unless you spray it. Rolling over stippling that has not been painted will most likely pull some of the stippling off the ceiling. Latex ceiling white is what you need to use for the ease in cleaning and the light odor. Oil base paint is almost unheard of for ceiling paint anymore. If your ceiling is painted now with oil base then you will need to either go back with oil or paint it with "kilz". Latex will not stick to straight oil paint. Pick a spot in the ceiling that will not be noticed and cut a little section out to take with you to the paint store. They should be able to tell you if it's oil or latex.
