Use a large sponge. Dip it in the paint and use the side of the sponge and "stamp" it on the wall. Have 2 or 3 different color shades to mimick the variations in bricks. The go back with a brush to paint the "mortar" between the bricks.
I've used the method described above and the only problem I've had using the "block sponge" method is that the colors get muddy very quickly and you have to keep rinsing the sponge out which uses a lot more paint.
That being said, I prefer cutting my own block stencil sponging on a base color. Keeping the other paint colors on their own palette, I use smaller sponges to add the other colors after the base coat dries. I also don't "Paint in" the mortar color, I use that as my base coat to save the tedious work of trying to exactly paint in between in faux bricks. For a faux brick project, you can cut a stencil by using large cardboard, poster or mattboards even work, to save some money on larger mylar sheets which can be expensive. You just have to treat the stencil with a little respect and use a little more painter's tape to adhere it.
