12-2 is normal for circuits protected by a 20 amp breaker. 14-2 is normal for circuits protected by a 15 amp breaker. If you're extending an existing circuit then you should keep with what has already been done. You might think that it's always safe to use 12-2 even on an existing 15 amp circuit - but the theory is that in the future someone else may see your 12-2, not know that other parts of the circuit are 14-2, and upgrade the breaker to 20 amps - so don't mix wire gauges.
