Do you recommend painting tiles as part of a bathroom makeover?

Question:is it possible to get a good result from painting tiles

Answers:
No - the surface of the tiles are too smooth. The paint will quickly peel off and look nasty.

If you are after a quick short term fix, you could do it - but it will still look cheap.

no. remove tiles if you want to paint!
You can get special paint for going over tiles. To get reasonable results you need to paint then repoint. (Although it still looks like painted tiles)

If you use ordinary paint it looks awful
NO! I know you can buy tile paint, and they use it on those makeover shows, but the finished result looks bad and doesn't last long, so looks even worse after a while. You can buy plain white tiles very cheaply, and those would look an awful lot better than painting what you have, if the issue is cost.
I wouldnt paint em coz if you have to replace one at any time youre gonna have to scrape all the paint off the surrounding tiles and then repaint them again. Id buy glazed tiles that are waterproof and easy to clean.
yes its a great idea and a hell of a lot cheaper to get a nice affect and the design you actually want.you will get a good affect if you put a proper base tile coat on before the actual colour you want.Dont take shortcuts.
no dont do it. i moved into a flat once where the tiles were painted it looked awful and took us ages to remove the paint. you also have the problem of it wearing off in time anyway.. just remove the tiles and replace them more expensive but worth it in the long run
Now this can depend on the type of tiles that you have. You can brighten them up really well with some cleaners that are out there. but to paint on tile is something you will have to try out with one that is hidden a bit so if it works it can look bad or good and you can make up your mind.
The problem is that painted tiles always look like painted tiles. I don't think they have perfected them enough yet to make them look great. Also if you happen to scratch a tile the paint will come off. I guess if you like that painted look it would be okay. I personally think it looks cheap. I have seen many different painted bathroom tiles and have never seen one that I really liked. But it is a matter of opinion. I would seriously think of another decorating idea. It all looks so very good on TV when you see it done, but when you see it in person, well, it has a lot to be desired. Good luck
if done properly then it can look brilliant but you need to do it properly - clean, base coat, top coat etc.
I did it and it was a pain in the @ss!
U can get a gud effect if u really have the time, effort and patience.
But I didn't like it...x
Even using tile paint and a very steady hand, the results are very poor. No matter how hard you try the tiles still look like they are painted. Remove the tiles and start again.
go to your local Lowe's or Home Depot's paint department. There are special primers and paitns for this type of action. a friend of mine didn't like the color of her tile, but liked the tile being there.so she painted them. they look great! they just need to be primed and everything correctly to ensure everything sticks and doesn't peel
Most answers are great. I would tile on top of the existing tiles, apparently its OK to do so providing the existing tiles are sound. Tile paint if applied carefully with a foam mini-roller can look great if done very carefully.
I have heard you can paint tile, but I don't think it will work very well. If you use the bathroom, it will not stick. I watched HGTV and they had the tile painted by a professional (sprayed on with a gun). It looked great, but cost $900. I just kept my retro pink and gray tile. It is excellent shape and I just decorate in those colors.
Good Luck
better to tile over old tiles cheaper and better job .tried the paint job not worth expense you need tile base coat then primer and then finish coat so you are painting 3 times with so so results
