Any ideas for making my room seem bigger?
Question:Ok,my room is tiny, and i have lots of big furniture! I have a white loft bed w/ built in desk underneath, small white bookshelf, purple circle chair, huge window, and like a 2' wide dresser w/ TV on top! Any ideas for redecorating?
Answers:
Get rid of all that furniture. You don't really need it taking up all that space.
Just place mirrors of saint gobain at opposite empty places and enjoy the new furnish !!
First and foremost get some big mirrors on the wall opposite your window. For an even greater effect put one big mirror on another wall. You would be surprised how much bigger it will seem.
Hang a large mirror! It visually multiplies the space.
What exactly is tiny? What color walls, floors accessories are you using? You say you have a large window, have you tried using a mirror opposite the window? It will give the feeling of extra space and brighten the room. Try using light, white, or pastel colors. Wallpaper with a small design will also work to expand the space. Try www.BHG.com, they have many suggestions and examples of rooms to look at for ideas.
Mirrors, bright colors and stripes. these all help to set the illusion that he room is bigger than it really is
paint the room a raisin color, and get rid of the chair and book case, or attach the book case onto the wall.
Make a cover to go over the TV that can open and close- paint it like the walls so that it disappears.
move all out
How about ditching the bookcase and replacing it with some shelves mounted on the wall? Getting things off the floor always makes the space look bigger. If you have a huge window, that's great...open your curtains and/or shades as much as possible and it will look much bigger.
Painting the room in a light color will make the room appear bigger. Then add lots of color with pillows, pictures, etc. Also, adding mirrors makes rooms appear bigger than they are.
This questioned was posed on HGTV and believe it or not they said if the room is small don't pretend it's big. They said paint it a dark color if you like and even to use large furniture pieces, but not to crowd the room with too many pieces. They said that smaller rooms look cozy. Mirrors do work wonders especially if they are positioned in an area that relects into another room. It's like the room is twice the size. I would eliminate small accessories in a small room. It's just a reminder that the room is small. If you choose to go with lighter colors, monochromatic colors work best and striped wallpaper does add height.
You can have things/furniture spaced out and if that doesn't work, paint the walls cream or white.
Consider maybe getting rid of one item in your room. Do you have light colored walls? That helps with enlarging the look of the room. Also putting a thin, medium sized wall mirror could help. Don't cluter things either, like having two things shoved into a corner...and also KEEP ORGANIZED. Unorganized things can make a room look really junky. Keep as much off the surface of your desks and things off the floor as much as possible. Good luck!
Is it all necessary and used on a regular basis? Could you get rid of the circle chair? (If you are a student, and this is your whole living space, maybe not.) If you have other rooms though, getting rid of the office type stuff would help.
Putting the dresser in front of the window would make it sort of disappear. The TV would be better off the furniture, and there are inexpensive wall mounting brackets for small tv's.
If everything is a must, and nothing could go, make a little diagram on paper to scale with the room outline, the window and door, and then cut out little circles and rectangles that are to scale of your furniture, and you can move things around on paper until you find just the right layout, then move the actual furniture.
Also, putting the TV on an angle in a corner, either on top of the bookcase or on a little stand, would make the room seem larger.
Good luck!
lighter solid colors and non-busy floor patterns make a room look larger. I like the mirror idea too.
