I'm a fashion-impaired college student. How can I decorate my dorm room so it's not too boring?

Question:I will be living in a fairly small room with my roommate from last year (who's decorating ability is no greater than mine). Last year we had a large room, and by the end of the year managed to put up a few random posters, which really didn't help. I'm not sure if the room will hold any extra furniture, but what are some things I can put up on the walls? Should I have the room themed? If so, what do you recommend? What are good colors to use in the room?

Any other comments or suggestions will also be appreciated!

You aren't fashion-impaired, you are just normal. Since you like music then I would suggest you decorate with musical items. Sometimes you can find guitars or other instruments at a Good Will or Salvation Army. Get some old sheet music again at an auction or maybe at a music store. Paint your walls a soft pleasing color that will be easy to live with. Go to Home Depot and look at the paint samples. A soft beige would work and you could accent with brighter colored bedspreads, chair cushions . Find a bust of Beethoven or if you like country then hang up a cowboy hat or whatever else you like. Sports are a great theme also. I suggest you watch Home Makeover with Ty Pennington and she what they do with peoples rooms. Now they are creative but you are too, give it a try and have a great year in college. This is your future, make it the best you can.. The world has enough jerks!

Beer signs, rock posters, and anti-social rhetoric.
That's a neat challenge! Have you ever watched HGTV's decorating shows, like Design on a Dime, Decorating Sense, My First Nest, etc.? They have some great rooms that they put together for very little--or no--money. If I were going to share a college dorm, I'd try for a shabby chic type of room. One can haunt garage sales, thrift shops, junk yards...even dealers who sell off demolition materials. Find fabric--old sheets or remnants--with colourful roses or other flowers and use it inside out! Yes! Inside out makes it look worn and shnabby. Buy simple desks (if the college does not provide them), sand them down and paint them with sponges, scrunched up paper towels, whatever, to make it look old.

I wish I were there! This is something I have always wanted to do.
Posters, old license plates, a lava lamp and pictures of friends and family.
If you are into music show it by displaying your guitar on a guitar holder.
You could use Wallies or Wonderful Graffiti. Wallies are wall paper cut-outs; some are self-adhesive and some have to be dipped in water, but either is easily removable. The same with Wonderful Graffiti - you could do sayings, quotes, maybe a song lyric you like that you basically rub on. It is also removable.
do some tatouage to give your room some depth - a big willow tree, arbor or whatever your into. Just google "tatouage" & get the discounted stuff (same thing just less $) - it is like a mural, but this is affordable, easy, fun & fantastic looking & wow, what depth it brings to a room. The great thing is when you get ready to move you just paint right over it.
