How would you use shades of color on a tray ceiling to really show off it's architectual depth?
Question:I have a tray ceiling in the master bedroom of my newly constructed house. I am choosing paint colors and I am trying to decide how to paint the tray ceiling. Would you use 2 different colors, two different shades of the same color, or paint it all the same? Also if using two different colors or shades where would you use each of them? I know that I am going to paint my walls a gold hue. My bedding is a brick red color with gold as the accent color. It is a very elegant scroll design. I want the ceiling to look very elegant and tasteful as well--not tacky! Any ideas and advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I would do a darker shade of your wall color on the edging part, your wall color on the tray ceiling part itself, and I would think about doing the scroll pattern in your bedding in a brick red on top of the tray ceiling part (around the border). It will give you that touch of red and your pattern to tie the room together. I would have someone come in who does faux painting or decorative painting to do the scroll.
If you did all red in the tray it will give the illusion of bringing it down and part of the charm of tray ceilings is that it gives you some height in a room.
i think two shades of the same color would be good. say blue, with the darker blue closer to the floor and the lighter farther away. or two shades of soft white.. i think its said, you paint the ceiling a lighter color than the walls if the ceiling is less than 10 feet high. darker if the ceiling is more than 10 feet high.
just white
my ? 2 u.. do u want the ceiling to b noticed when u come in or jst a architectual design? If u'r going for a statement.. then paint the ceiling whatever u r gonna paint u'r ceiling color.. then paint the ledges going vertical.. the color of u'r walls. U could even do a soft sponging effect w/ 2 hues of the same color or u'r wall that would give it a slight look but not over powering.
