Can a BRICK fireplace be R-E-N-O-V-A-T-E-D?

Question:My home has an all brickish/stone fireplace from floor to roof. It is in the shape of a 20 ounce coke bottle. Narrow on the top and wider at the bottom.

I would really love to update and make it a mantle fire place. P.S. it burns real wood logs like in the old days.

Answers:
You could paint it and use masonry screws to have a mantle installed, but painting a brick fireplace takes time and a lot of paint. You would have to wet it first before painting so that the brick and mortar will absorb the paint, and then you don't have to do as many coats.

You could also cover it with wood framing and sheetrock. I would get an actual contractors opinion on that. It can be done, I just don't know if you need to use a special sheetrock or if regular will do.

u could put a facade of wood design over it.. I've seen it done several times on hgtv shows... & TLC shows...

ck out http://www.hgtv.com OR http://www.diynetwork.com they may have some directions for u.. or u could just paint it a different color OR spruce it up w/ a glaze.. but if i'm understanding u desire... u can do the face-lift on it.
