What's the best kind of power sander to use for stripping painted wood?
Question:I'm sanding our basement steps and then I'm going to stain them after I get the paint all off. So I'd like to know, what's the best kind of sander available for a decent price?
Answers:
the sander to use on a flat surface is the belt sander. after that you shoule use a corner sander to get into back corners of the steps. Start with course and work you way to 240 slowly. After the steps are smooth enough for your touch clean with tack cloth before staining.
I would use a belt sander with coarse grit. It will eat up the paint, and also the wood if you press too hard. I like dewalt tools, but for that application, even a cheaper black and decker or similar will work.
A palm or Finish sander should work fine, Just make sure you start out with a 60 grit sandpapaer and work your way down to a 240 grit. 60,120,180.240. On the last two sandings, wipe with a damp cloth and let dry so that the wood fibers will stand up so that you get a smoother finsh, Also be sure to use some kind of non skid tread system, you can use silica sand in poly uethane , Just tape off a couple of strips per step and apply silica sand poly mix on the final pass.
how about using a chemical type stripper that requires a very minimal sanding
paint stripper bubbles the paint then you just scrape it off with a pddy knife. snders will take a lot of time and if using a belt sander may put grooves in the wood.
Why don't you use a Heat Gun? Cheaper than a sander. Then just use a paint scraper., and sand off with sanding paper.
a belt sander but go slow it eats up the wood very fast.
