Painting over existing chipped paint?

Question:I am redoing my garage. Its is wooden and moldy. The previous paint is chipping big time. Yesterday I pressure washed it and scrapped as much of the old chipped paint as possible off. Is okay to go ahead and paint over it, even if I missed some chips.

Answers:
if you have areas where paint wasnt removed without the scrapping and pressure washing its fine, as long as you have the easy loose chips off.

just make sure you prime first before you paint.

Not really, you will get them peeling off and then your whole door will be ruined, try sanding down nay of the paint left on the garage, also paint a primer, before the real paint.
sure...it will show threw the new paint though but if it's not a lot of chips then i wouldn't really worry about it.
No, it's not.
try to use sandpaper ,rough one for the rest to come off. That way the garage will look better when it is smooth . Less paint chips in the paintbucket for you
Get everything that's loose, or it will just peel again, or the chips will come off on your paintbrush. Little chips seem to adhere with latex paint, though.
NO DONT DO THAT! All of your hard work will go to a waste if u paint over chipped paint cause your paint job will look clumpy and bumpy lol so if u want to get rid of the paint thats still tacked on to the wall sand it off with and electirc sander or just grab some sand paper and do it by hand..but if u use an electric sander b careful not to grind to hard!.. hopefully this works for u
sandpaper the chips first to smooth them out a bit and to get rid of loose edges.the last thing u want is to go to all that effort for the paint to peel back where the chips are xxx
My dads having me help redo their garage (in the same condition) He said every last paint chip should be removed before repainting or it will look sloppy.
I think you could get away with it, though. My dads a bit of a perfectionist.
No and I will give you a spanking if you do so! LOL
use a spray bottle with hot water and then hand scrap or sand the chips off, if it is high and you are not the ladder kind, use a pole or old broom stick and put the scrapper on the end. Prime then paint for best results
Use paint removers (acids) for removing the old existing paint which are available in market. Apply two coats of paint with required time gap between Fisrt and second coats. It will last for long time.
Pressure washing is a bad idea, it forces water in places you don't want it. Painting over wet siding is a bad idea. Wait until completely dry, at least few days. Prime where you have bare wood. If you paint over a few flakes, all that will happen is the new paint will peel with time. You may have a water problem that is causing the peeling, your new paint may peel too.
first you need to make sure you kill the mold. It can be damaging to your health. Vinegar will kill it. After rinsing with diluted vinegar...go at it. You'll just see where the chips were, or weren't depending on how you look at it.
Yea its okay, but it could cause the new paint based on weather such as rain, snow and sun damage to make it peel alot faster then if it was applyed to a nice smooth surface..it will also look bumpy because of the raised chip paints verses the flat surface (constrasting). But if you dont mind a nice "old country" look then go for it.
I'm not a professional contractor, but do watch a lot of home improvement shows like This old house and Home Again. I think you should get all of the paint off. Try using a sander and getting the rest off and if your garage is moldy then you need to talk to a professional about getting the mold out too.
I just had the same thing last weekend. I used a hand sander that you stick sand paper on and plug it in and it does the work for you. It smooths down the rough edges and will probably get the rest of the paint off.
Not expensive at all. Be sure and wear a particulate respirator face mask because the paint could contain lead.
