How to buld a raised bed against a outside wall of a house ? materials required?
Question:will i need to lay plastic sheeting at foundation level
Answers:
For best protection of the house you will either need to lay plastic, rubber sheeting, or something like Thoro-Seal(TM) or Dry-Lok(TM) which are paint/trowel on. I have used dryLok and applied it with a trowel.. Works great and wont slide off or that kind of stuff..
Some of the variable will be how high you make the bed above the ground.. More soil contact = more possibility for moisture absorption..
Strongest plan is if there is a basement or poorly ventilated crawlspace use the drylok, if there is a well ventilated crawl space you can use the plastic on the wall to soil level and the bottom of the bed..
If you use the drylok dig down about 6-8 inches to apply it below ground level and then use the plastic on the bottom of the bed and you should be golden..
The plastic separates the soil in the bed from the ground water table so all of the moisture will have to come from rain and watering so be prepared for it to dry out faster than the yard.
Be careful you do not cause damp by doing that
Check where your damp proof course is before putting anything against your house wall, if you jump it you can cause damp problems in the house.
Go without your raised bed,it's not worth the trouble.
DON'T It cost me £6000 to cure the dry rot caused when the previous owner decided to have a bed of soil and boulders placed against the house.
