How do I turn an old kitchen counter into a bar in my basement?

Question:Hello,
I have an old kitchen counter and cupboards in my basement and I want to turn it into a bar. The countertop surface is a laminate and I need to raise the height of the entire counter. What material options do I have to refinish the bar top and how would I build up the counter to the correct height? The counter is removable right now, so that helps. Any ideas or links to someone who has turned an old kitchen counter into a bar?
