Designing Tips for working with black & white tiles and lots of color?
Question:We have just spent a lot of money refinishing our basement for our 6 children, ages 7-12. I would like to put the classic black & white checkerboard pattern on the floors and bring in LOTS of bright colors to make it feel less like a basement. Does anyone have any unique ideas of how best to bring color in and what colors - I don't really want to just paint each wall a different color.
Answers:
Try bringing in color by using fabric on your furniture, in throw pillows. You could try painting some of the furniture as well (ie storage chest or tables). Also consider using vibrant color paintings or pictures for the walls.
My all time fav way to introduce color into a room is through fresh flowers.
Also, check out TLC or HGTV (I watch both channels) for a recent show done with b/w tile and vibrant colors in the kitchen.
Have fun.
If you haven't already put down the tiles, buy some different colored ones such as turquoise, red, yellow etc and set one in evenly instead of a black one here and there. Also use overstuffed pillows in bright colors and also bright colored lamps instead of your basic black or wood.
decorate it like a 1950s diner, and include red /chrome, turquoise/chrome, and/or pink/chrome booths and/or tables & chairs. Paint the walls in the corresponding colors. Bring in movie posters from the 50s, neon signs, a pinball machine & a juke box. FUN!

Instead of black and white, use white and red/green/blue/yellow [ crayon shades ].
Add upholstered furniture in blue, bookcases/shelves in red/green/blue/yellow.
Don't forget throw pillows or floor cushions in the crayon colors!
Use storage tubs for each kid or each type of toy in a different color - red/green/
blue/yellow/purple/pink? Match tubs to the same color shelves.
Add a striped rug in the reg/green/blue/yellow, and curtains [ if any windows ] in a crayon color print.
Frame one of each kids best art in 'their' color for the walls.
Everything coordinates, but will 'grow' with them into a rec room.
