Using tape when painting ceiling?
Question:I'm going to paint my ceiling a different color than the walls. I'm going to paint the ceiling first. I was thinking to not tape the walls and to allow some overlap when I cut-in the corners. Then when I'm ready to paint the walls I will tape the ceiling. How long do I need for the paint (latex) to dry on the ceiling before I put tape on it? And, do you have other suggestions on how I should do this?
Answers:
Wait a few days after you paint the ceiling and use blue painters tape. Make sure you rub it down well along the edge that meets the wall and let the wall color dry for a while before you remove the tape. A good way to avoid a jaged edge is to run a razor blade around the tape edge before you remove the tape. That way the paint doesn't stick to the tape, stretch and peel away when you remove your tape.
You can just wait a few days and use the blue painters tape. I would rent a sprayer and use a large paint shield that fits on the end of a broom stick. Its fast and easy.
ceiling first then with a steady hand cut in the walls with out tape you will be surprised how easy it is
if the ceiling has a texture to it, paint the walls first, then the ceiling. otherwise the blue tape won't seal all the holes from the textured ceiling, and you will be going over it again.
