Anyone know why my grout color is patchy?
Question:I just had natural slate tile laid professionally. We chose a gray colored grout and now that it has dried, the grout is patchy in color. Some places it is almost white, other places it ranges from light to dark gray. Why is this?

It's possible the grout was improperly mixed, I kind of doubt that though. Most like likely they either had to much water in their sponges when they were wiping the floor down. Or after they wiped down with the sponges and were wiping down with a rag they got some of the white grout dust caught in the grout. May just need them to come back and take a grout cleaner and clean all the grout. Then seal it once it is dry and before you start using the area.
You also didn't state whether or not you used an epoxy grout. It's also pretty hard to mix incorrectly but it's possible. If you did use epoxy grout then it will definetly need to be redone. Also you will need to make sure that that cover the entire area with utility paper for 5-7 days. It takes that long for the epoxy to full set-up and cure. Once it is fully cured there is no reason to seal it, since epoxy grout doesn't require sealing.
Was the grout sealed?
My guess would be that your professionals didn't mix the grout very well. In any case, make them remove it and do it over. Although it's normal for the color of slate to vary from piece to piece because it is a natural product, grout color should be uniform throughout.
Grout was not mixed thoroughly. Have the installer re-grout and make sure they mix well. After they've done this, you should put down grout sealer.
More than likely, it was not mixed thoroughly.
