How to re stain my deck?
Question:my brother tried to stain my deck and did a really bad job, how can I re-stain my deck? what kind of stain?
Answers:
If the deck has not been sealed in addition to staining, a simple solution of household bleach and water can be used to scrub it. This will remove the surface stain and any dirt build up.
Once clean, use a stain designed specifically for decking. You should be able to find it at any paint or home store. You can use either a brush or a cloth, but make sure the strokes are even and preferably go only in one direction. Once a small area has been applied, wipe with a soft lint free cloth. Do not use paper towels as they will leave a residue. Most deck stains have good instructions on the can. In addition to the stain, I would also use a sealer. Thompson's water seal is a good one but there are others on the market as well. This coat will help to protect the deck from weathering and help it to keep its original color. Make sure when you go to pick out your stain that you tell the salesperson what kind of wood the deck is made from. Although expensive initially, redwood makes a beautiful and long lasting deck.
Also, if you have any kind of sealer already on the deck, it will have to be sanded to remove as much of it as possible. Otherwise, the new stain will not be able to sink into the wood. Try to sand as evenly as possible as leftover sealant in spots will make the new stain appear spotty.
Hope this helps.
i would power wash it and treat the floor with a clear sealer and just stain the rails.it is so much easier to maintain if the floor is left a natural color
