Well, one thing's for sure: if you're gonna cut corners, the 2 places you shouldn't are your shoes and your mattress... if you aren't in one, you're in the other!
A firm mattress is the best for your health. If you don't want back problems, then go this route.
As for the best bed, in my opinion, it's the Heavenly Bed from Westin Hotels. And yes! Hurrah! You can buy them. Just log onto a Westin Hotel web site... You'll be able to buy it from there! And what's fantastic is, you can go spend a night in a Westin Hotel and try it out for the night! It's the best sleep I've EVER had! It's definitely my next mattress purchase...

a good futon, like at least 10 inches thick is best
right on the floor
my wife bought a bed for like $900
now my back always hurts
I just bought a cal king stearns and foster, total height is 18 inches, its the best sleep I ever had, spend the extra money, you spend half your life sleeping, its a wise investment!
We bought a Tempur-pedic, and love it! no more back pain, or neck pain!
If you can afford it, nothing beats the tempur-pedic. It is wonderful.

I researched our mattress for 3 months before I plunged in and spent a good chunk of money. I built my mattress with layers of latex, and a topping of foam. It is firm but you can still sink into it. It supports your body and cradles it at the same time. We've been sleeping on this mattress for 10 months and have no regrets.
Not to mention that the mattress was 1/2 the price of a tempurpedic.
In the end, you have to realize how much you're willing to spend on your mattress and go from there. I wanted to spend a reasonable amount (for something very important to me--sleep), and get a great product. And I got it!
