IKEA furniture?
Question:My husband and I went to IKEA yesterday to get some ideas. We found A LOT of things we want and I was wondering if anyone has any furniture from IKEA? What do you have? Do you love it or hate it? What do you like or dislike about it?
We are thinking about using IKEA for our kitchen re-do as well as a family room and bedroom.
Oh...and how are the dishes and pots and pans?
Thanks for any info!!
Answers:
I bought my entire living room furniture from Ikea.
Pros- Bedding, great blanket deals and sheets. Lasts really well. The furniture is nice as well, easy to put together and all match really well.
Cons- The silverware and cooking pans. The silverware rusted and the pans are NOT non-stick. Don't purchase cooking utensils there.
I had a bed, a desk and a few tables from there. Not happy with them, they are not good for everyday use especially if you have rough children, very cheaply made. But thats just my opinion. Dishes and stuff like that are pretty good, never used their pans. Their textiles are ok too. Plus I have seen some of my stuff in other people homes, not very unique-
it's kinda like college dorm furniture-won't make it past 4 years
IKEA is sometimes jokingly referred to as "a Swedish word meaning crap." Some of their furniture is good and some of it is a little shady, just be cautious about what you purchase.
I bought 6 chairs, a dining room table, and a stool there. Four of the chairs (the dining ones) were total crap - I tried reinforcing them with additional fasteners and it didn't help. The other 2 chairs (counter stools) seem to be holding up pretty well, my mom has them now. The stool needed serious reinforcement, but works well as a side table. The dining table is great - very sturdy and beautiful.
Just be careful what you buy.
In my opinion, IKEA is good only for small things or furniture that you will not have for the longest time. The quality really isn't the best. I have a small chest in my room to store some extra clothes. It is fairly new and a handle is already broken, but it's good just for temporary storage. I also bought a mirror there which broke. Plus, you have to assemble it all yourself.
What you get from Ikea is certainly not fine quality furniture. If it gets normal everyday use, it will fall apart in a few years. It does look nice. And it's an acceptable stop-gap if you can't afford good furniture now, but think that you will be able to in three-to-five years. Prepare for the Ikea stuff to fall apart in that amount of time.
I just depends on how you use or abuse your furniture. If you are rough with your things than I suggest just spending the money to buy higher quality furniture. On the other hand, if you are the type of person who takes good care of your things, than buying their moderate quality furniture should be no problem. I love their kitchen ware, it's nice and sturdy. You of all people know how you are with your things so just use your best judgment. i hope your remodeling turns out nice.
I've actually really liked the stuff I got there.
I have the Malm bedroom set, a drafting table, a desk chair and a few other lamps and small things. Everything is fine to this day. We dont have any kids or anything and it's really just me.
Just keep in mind you get what you pay for. My desk chair looks great but it's not very well made. It was 19 bucks though, so I didnt expect much (plus it was advised for light use).
My brother has some IKEA furniture and it is on the smaller scale. It is made in Europe and EVERYTHING in Europe is made smaller b/c there is no room in the apartments over there (I was on vacation in Spain a month ago and stayed with a friend at their apartment). And it is NOT comfortable.
I love the kitchen showrooms they have. I would definately re-decorate my kitchen with IKEA because their cabinets seem to be of better quality. The dishes and such are not the best quality. Hence the price - you are getting what you pay for. I believe IKEA is geared towards college students, grads, and starter families who live on a budget. If you want QUALITY you might want to be a little more selective in the items you are planning on purchasing from IKEA.
If you are planning on getting kitchen pots & pans - go to Crate & Barrel which has some very contemporary lines. Or I would spend more money on the name brands such as Kicthen Aid or Cuisinart. The everyday plates and silverware - you can purchase on the cheap, I think. But just figure out what you want that will last...and what is just for looks.
Have fun shopping.
so my husband and I have a bed from there I love it.
and our entire living room from IKEA i think it's the best for people who are starting out or even people who have things but just want a new fresh look. this is the bedroom (best money ever spent in my book), and the BEST book case it is contemporary with a lot of storage. Make sure to get the baskets if you do get the book case it looks so much better. :-)
