How do you paint over dark ash wood paneling?
Question:The paneling is dark stained ash. I want light walls. This includes the living room and kitchen. Also I want light cabinets. They too are dark ash.
Answers:
you can paint it with paint, and you will have sinned and doomed yourself to be relegated to the regions of eternal torment meant for people who paint brick and things that ought not be painted...
or you can apply a colour wash, and give is a light colouring and still leave the quality of wood looking wood.
to do so mix one part enamel paint with 3 parts faux-glazing liquid, and apply in a thin layer, you can always add another if the first isn't to your liking.
i do this in alot of homes, and the result is smashing. makes dark rooms open up and look all kinds of lighter and airier. and i've never had to do more than one layer.
First you a primer such as "Kilnz" of "Zinzer" these run about $20 for a gallon, then let it dry and paint whatever color you choose
I had dark paneling in my dining room, and we put a good undercoat and make sure you get into all the groves. Then put your primmer on top, you might need two coats. But don't go for cheap paint, buy the best. I love my room now, and don't know why we didn't do it years ago.
