Rat of a boyfriend's furniture...?

Question:My ex boyfriend gave me some items of furniture. Everytime i look at them i think of him and he treated me so badly in the end. Should i take them outside and smash them up with a hammer, or should i just live with them? I wouldn't have anything to sit on if i did this though. Advice please. Thanks!

Answers:
Don't throw them away just yet and don't "live with them."

Call the guy and ask him if he wants them first so that if he or one of his friends sees them sitting on the curb, he won't take you to small claims court and make a bogus claim against you for the supposed value of the property.

Exes can be mean. Keep that in mind and cover your bases.

Sell the furniture, and buy new chairs :)
Have a yard sale and sell them! Then you can get rid of the old furniture and the memories, and score some cash for new furniture too!
get the hell over it
Give them too him with presents of prawns sewn inside HAHA!

Nah wait until you can get some new furniture then go take your frustrations out on it :P
sell em thru the newspaper or something. then you can use the cash to help pay for new stuff.
Hammer. Definitely. Better to have milk crates and bean bags for furniture temporarily until you get more furniture.
Give it to goodwill or some other charity, and maybe pick up some new furniture whil you're there?
If it's good furniture list it on craigslist.com. Sell it, and buy furniture that you like, and that you can sit on with someone new :) Best of luck
You wouldn't cut off your nose now, just to spite your face, would you!! Wait till you've got the money to replace the furniture then go at it with a hammer.
do it you will feel so much better he will finaly be out of your life
then you can appeal on your local freecycle site for someone to donate new stuff
toss um , it seem like you keep thinking about him every time you see the stuff. That may be a start to getting over him. and hammering them maybe be a good out let for your anger.
Burn it all. You'll feel much better.
sell it all on ebay and enjoy spending his money on something you like.
Its not right to feel bad inside your own home. Your home should be somewhere where you can enjoy yourself and not have to worry about the past. I advice, if they really upset you and make you think of him, chuck them out. First of all save up enough money for a new sofa set, as you don't want to be sitting on the floor!
That's a crunch. Tell ya what, pick an item to replace, a chair say, and when you have the replacement, take the chair out to the curb on trash day, in case somebody wants it. Then pick another item to replace, and so on.

But of course, if you would feel good about busting up the stuff, then go ahead with that. But only after you have the replacement.
Don't smash them. If you want to get rid of them sell them or give them to Charity for the tax write off. If you can live without the pieces get rid pf them, they sound like they're poison to you.
burn them. burn them all.
You don't need to be reminded of him every time you look at it. Drag them outside and let somebody steal them. Then go out and buy yourself some big cushions to sit on until you can afford a new couch.
Go by chair or couch cover and throw some pillows on it. Will look totally different You can by really good ones at bed bath beyond, Or sometimes yard sales. that will change the look until you can get new furniture.
You could throw some pretty sheets over them. Or you could donate them to Goodwill and buy some comfortable plastic patio resin chairs and pretty cushions. Throwing out the furniture (er, donating them) might help you get the bum completely out of your mind.
Put them on ebay!
He may even buy them back!!
Well why dont you sell them and buy new,i wouldnt want a constant reminder of a rat boyfriend in my house.
Sell the furniture and use the money to buy a life, geez!!
Sell the furniture and buy new stuff for your house, this way you'll refurnish and get rid of bad memories. Picture yourself with other new guy in your apartment and the old furniture; not a good match!!
why not give them a makeover, if you can paint then & add decoration it will look like new stuff in the case of chairs throws can change the look or you can buy covers from Plumbs that changes a 3 piece suite's look completely. they often advertise on the back of magazines hope this helps you
no sit on it and think how stupid he was to have lost you, you have had the last laugh and he has nothing
I'd say, replace it a.s.a.p.

If he really GAVE it to you, and you're not going to get any stick from him over it later, sell it through the local paper or eBay, if its value makes it worth the hassle - but second-hand furniture does not fetch much these days. Otherwise, let someone benefit from it, rather than just smashing it. In the UK, we can't just put things out on the pavement expecting that someone might want it, though that is done in eg The Netherlands. (We can only put things out on the pavement in UK if we have booked a date for the Council to take it away as rubbish.) But there are furniture stores run like charity shops by the Salvation Army and other voluntary agencies. They give furniture away to people in need, or sell it at low second-hand prices to others and then use the money to help people. They would pick it up for you and take it off your hands. And if you buy some other stuff from them, they would deliver that at the same time as picking up the old. You would just need to wait until they have something you would like by way of replacement. And even if it was not entirely to your taste, it would tide you over. And if you want to have something new, there's a certain big Scandinavian store selling innovative furniture very cheaply! Lots of people sneer about IKEA, but its furniture is surprisingly well-made, for the price.

You could use a couple of throws in the meantime, to disguise the old stuff!

It was a nice thought, from the contributor who hoped you would find a new guy to sit on the new furniture with you. But I'd say - take time to rediscover yourself, and enjoy just being you for a while, with a few friends round. All the best!
Try craigslist for free furniture. They are ALL OVER the US. craigslist.org .. then just pick the state you live in, and etc. We have a fairly active one in Minneapolis and I give things away on the free section ALL of the time... good luck!!
It would just be spiteful if you smashed everything up he gave you. I would keep them, i think you had a lucky escape. You could get some throws for the furniture to cover them up. You will meet somebody even better soon.
