I have an ugly fireplace surround, and want to...?

Question:...change the marble/malachite around it. This is NOT the mantel which is white. It is NOT the insert which is the gas stove. It is the decorative panel that runs between the stove and the mantel.
Can someone tell me how difficult it would be to replace marble with tile?
Or can I tile right on top of the marble?
I read an article on hgtv that made it look easy, but I've never done this before and would like to do it because I want to keep labor cost minimal, and because I like taking on creative and sometimes, challenging projects.
I really can't live with this ugly fireplace surround so please help with ideas.

Answers:
if the marble is level you can place the tile ontop of existing material.but marble is expensive so you may want to use it somewhere else or sell the slab or slabs

yes you can as long as the marble is of sound structure go to your local homedepot or stone supply comp and asked to see the decrative stone they have for fireplaces or check online its very thin and its half the weight of regular stone or brick
You could do better hanging out at the local hardware store than here on a question and answer format. That said - - - many a mistake has been made trying to mask marble however tiling over is o-k if all materials are meant to resits heat etc especially the bonding agent for tile. Good luck.

Peace
