How to do a black antique finish on furniture?
Question:How do I go about achieving that black rubbed/antiqued look on a previously unpainted dresser. Do I use a stain or paint. I want the edges to look rubbed off or roughed up a bit. I don't think I want it jet black, just very dark it almost looks black. The look I have in mind is inspired by pottery barn and hobby lobby. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Sounds great! Paint it the desired color, rough the edges up with sandpaper, and give ti a coat of polyurethane.
Rough up the dresser to get it distressed. A chain will help.Hit it with the chain to give it a used look.Edges use coarse sand paper in direction of edges sparingly at first until reaching desired look. Oil prime and oil paint dressed and a sample of wood for later. Paint with mid tone or dark brown.let dry completely 2 to 3 days. sand with 200 grit paper. Mix oil glaze with black colorants available from paint store until very dark. Test sample on small piece of wood you painted to match. wipe glaze on lightly and let sit less than 1 minute or wipe as you go until you like the results. you can darken or lighten the glaze to suit your taste.
Compare some ideas from higher priced new furniture stores to Hobby Lobby and pottery barn furniture. Some furniture that's 'rubbed/antiqued' is easily spotted as 'antiqued' to the trained eye rather than being an actual antique and is unlikely to retain value later other than yard sale prices.
The black look of antique furniture is called ebony, so look for that color stain. Stain is intended to seep into the crevices of wood, and wood only, whereas paint applies to most surfaces with mixed results. In mentioning not wanting it jet black, it really does need to be black (ebony) but with a clear coat sealer that's gloss or semi-gloss as you choose. Your furniture can be shown off without being dull and will appreciate over time when well kept.
