Buy the best you can afford and go for a pattern that will not show marks. We bought a beautiful plain beige carpet which shows up every small mark and keeping it spotless has been hell. We are going to rip it up and go back to a wood floor.

It depends how big their budget is. Where they want the carpet to be, bedroom, bathroom, lounge. Also the colour scheme of the room, so they look for a matching colour.
Basically people want a carpet to fit into their budget, decor. that provides good , longlasting wear and is easy to clean
id be looking for a new carpet myself...
When you walk on it will it leave your foot print with every step. I have had carpet that showed foot prints all over the house. Hated it.
Paying a high price does not mean the carpet is good. I have yet to buy quality carpet, so... good luck!

Deep soft shag pile.easy on the knees.
Thickness and stain resistant, also depending on which room its for wearability. oh and colour.
depends where you want it to go look for the recommended one for that area IE a bedroom carpet would not last long in the front room etc
I do not recommend foam backing use either felt or hessian backed the felt ones are easier to lay
