What is the best way to hang a big heavy mirror on sheet rock?
Question:I recently got a big heavy mirror given to me, but I want to make sure I hang it right, I don't want to take the chance of it falling because of thin sheet rock, I have alot of kids running around and I am scared to hang it and have it fall on one of them! Please tell me the best way to do this, and can you hire someone professionally and if so does anyone know how much that would cost?
Answers:
you need to find a stud.
Rachel: That answer from the Dr is correct in regards to free hanging the mirror. The safest way is to find one of the studs behind the sheetrock used for wall support, and nail your hook into that. DO NOT try to use just the sheetrock as a support. Your best bet Rachel is to go to your local hardware store, or Home Depost, and explain the situation, and they can best advise you. Rach..if the mirror is large, and heavy, and possibly an antique, my suggestion would be find a piece of furniture that can go with the room, and set the mirror on it, using the wall as a back rest, similar to how bedroom dressers work. Good Luck With It Rachel. :-) Rachel: Timothy is right about the flanging style hooks that go through, and behind the sheetrock, and flare, or flange out on the backside of the sheetrock creating a wider, and stronger hook using more surface area on the backside of the rock. BUT.Some of these flanges..especially the plastic ones are suspect to not holding very heavy objects. They make metal ones that Butterfly Out once driven through a hole you need to make in the sheetrock to allow it to pass in a compressed position, and then you turn the screw provided, and it pulls the Butterflyed metal flanges up tight against the backside of the sheetrock. Rachel even these can be a pain to get to work right. Again I suggest asking at your hardware store for their opinion, or my Best Suggestion is use a piece of nice matching furniture, and set the mirror on it. No holes in the wall..No fear of hearing a loud Crash in the middle of the night...lol...and you've created a whole new look to your room. :-) Good Luck With Your Decision Rachel. Slippery: P.S. Not to mention the worry of the wire used on the back of the mirror to hold it. If the method used to hook the wire to the mirror is faulty, or old... time, and weight may lossen them, and CRASH :-(
The way to hang any heavier item on sheetrock is to use plastic sheetrock inserts which flange and flair out to the rear of the rock.the inserts flange when they are installed into the wall. DUH! I had to learn the hard way to hang heavy items on sheetrock. Failure and item replacement led me to the proper way to secure these items.
