Decorating ideas for basement?
Question:The basement has new sheetrock on walls and ceiling with recessed lighting. The is very little natural light. One side of the room will be used for crafts, sewing, laundry while the other side (stairwell in between) will be used for TV viewing, exercising (treadmill), and gaming.
I'd like it to have a warm feeling without being too dark and cave-like.
I haven't chosen flooring, wall color, or any furniture. I tend to have an eclectic style. I'd love to hear some ideas.

ok... what colors do u like? U have to have some colors that make u smile. Y don't u work w/ them... u can paint the one side u'r colors for u'r sewing,etc... then the other side anthr. So say u like reds/beige/tans... & the other side which will b for everyone..( so get their vote as well) like blues or bright colors.
U could paint the whole area in the tans/beige even do a faux finish if u like. THEN use their colors that u they like for couches/cushions for floor/lamps/hanging lts..etc... U could paint several stripes on the wall on both sides say horiz about 3/4 way up... then paint u'r red on u'r one wall... then say demin or navy on their wall & the wall in the middle... u can leave or paint anthr color.
Can u divide the rooms besides the stairway? Like get some different dressers..paint them to match U"R side... brown/red or both.. stack these things side by side & up to act as a divider.
So lst thing lst.. what colors do u like & so does u'r family? Then go w/ that. Get paint samples from the store but several of ea.. put them on the wall & look at them thru out the day & nt... Make sure u get plenty of lights.. lamps, hanging lamps.. .. u can go to thrift stores & find some different ones that u can jazz up or paint... I would probably NOT suggest covering u'r shades unless for the game/play/excer/room. But the fabric store clearance bins... all these things u can get & put on walls for pin up boards of u & u'r crafts/patterns... old wood dish rack the put dowels for u'r spools... put games all on one side of the room .. shelves/cubes/baskets... throw pillows..throws..
Be creative.. Have fun!
Lucky you! A "Blank Canvas":) Since you have an eclectic style, I don't know if anyone can tell you what to do, you sound like you have your own taste and style and you should just use the colors that YOU love~I'm the same way:) My basement is a finished basement also, but it's a walk-out, so I do have some natural light. I haven't let that stop me though, from using darker colors (which I love). I have a satin, striped~floral burgandy wallpaper in my kitchen down there..and I love it. You can always add more lighting~torchieres are great for bouncing light off the ceiling! I would keep the ceiling a bright white, but other than that, go crazy and use whatever colors you like. I like the look of wainscotting on the bottom of the walls, and either paint or wallpaper over that~it will make your room look taller and larger. Tile is great, but if you use it down there, it can give the room a "hollow" feeling, so be careful with that. And you could always choose a "theme" and carry that out through the basement...it's alot of fun looking for things that will be "just perfect" when you do a themed room! Have fun:)
Good Luck!!
