What is the first thing a visitor sees when they enter your door? and what should they see?

It really depends upon how your home is constructed. Like my front door opens up right into the living room - so no separate foyer. Experts say that if you have a home like mine, then you should first see a sofa or chair - an indication that it's a place to relax.

Here is a good resource & photos for a pleasant entryway:

Their "6 Steps to a Fabulous Foyer" include:

1. Start outside - Make sure the area is tidy (no forgotten toys behind the bushes), freshen the front door and porch railings with a coat of paint and change out the lighting fixture if it's broken or desperately outdated. Add a potted plant or two and go with miniature varieties of common evergreens like juniper or boxwood for year-round color (and less maintenance).

2. Light the way - When selecting lighting for a foyer, consider a combination of fixtures. A chandelier combined with table lamps on a console is a traditional look for a grand two-story entry, while a smaller foyer may call for wall sconces and downlights.

3.Set the tone - Not only is the foyer the first impression it's also the prologue for the rest of house and will give guests a sense of the style and personalities of the people who live there.

4. Bring on the drama - Using a nontraditional piece of furniture with special details—a handpainted dresser, a chaise covered in a vintage fabric—is an excellent way to set your foyer apart (while also making it more functional).

5. Make the floor a focal point - It's becoming more and more common for the foyer floor to differ from what's found throughout the rest of the house.

6. Accessorize with nature - If flowers present too much of a maintenance issue, consider other organic objects, like a lovely tray with a layer of smooth pebbles, a wall-mounted or tabletop fountain or a decorative vase holding tree branches cut from your own yard.

something that would invite them INTO u'r home.
The entry point in my house is the living room with soft orange walls, brown leather couch, tall armoir with mirror, soft vegetable dyed persian rugs, etc. The artwork is warm, and orginal, but not over powering.

The room is clean and orderly at all times...almost.
One thing that I always like to see (and is very important in my home) is the furniture you sit on (couch, chairs) to be facing the entrances in a manner that invites people to sit on them. In other words, do not arrange sitting furniture so that the backs of them are facing wherever people enter the room. Make it so it is easy to get to a soft spot to sit. Also, try to arrange the furniture that encourages conversation and relaxation, NOT the TV. Of course, since most people use the living room (family room, etc) to watch TV, make the furniture so that watching TV is comfortable, but have your main focus be on accomodating people to talk and enjoy eachother, not the tube.
Our smily face.....I think that's wat they should see.
