That is not possible.
dont think you can do that really! you would be staining gloss not wood! (or were you just being funny?)
you dont...you have to rub the paint of completly right back to the bare wood...then you can stain it

Wood stain is designed to colour and protect the wood .. gloss paint creates a barrier over that wood... so, while you can apply woodstain over gloss paint, it's a kind of pointless exercise.
Use a "shave-hook" and some Nitromors to remove the gloss paint or varnish and then apply some good quality wood stain .. it's a bit of an effort, but the end result will be more than worth it.
For woodstain effect, use a white undercoat, then cover with a stained varnish.

Sure you can. Knock the gloss down with a deglosser, or scuff it with 220-grit paper. Then, rather than stain, use a glaze, available at the home center, and go over top of it with that. The glaze should have a binder in it allowing it to stick. Glaze is nothing more than a weak paint or a thick stain, however you want to look at it. Stain itself won't work because it is mixed with mineral spirits and has no binder.
what you probably mean is a product could"paint and grain"by ronseal.
Its a paint that you apply to you gloss then overcoat with a satined finish. All the things you need come in the same box and should be available in any of the big diy outlets.
Will look fine on skirting boards but can look a bit naff on doors unless you put some practise in.
An alternative product is called brushwood.

Stain is just for bare wood so you would have to strip off the paint first. if you want to make it look like wood then the Ronseal stain and grain is good, you can get lots of other effects too, crackle glaze etc lots of ideas at hardware shops.
There is not such a product as far as I know. Ronseal make a paint and grain effect paint that will do the job though. It comes in several different "wood" types, such as pine or mahogany.
OR, you could go to the local library and get a book out on painting and decorating. Some have details of getting the effect you want with paint and varnish.
no...you would have to undercoat it with a buff colour then when dry you get a tin of scumble then grain it before putting a coat of varnish..
