Do blinds really make a difference when it comes to insulation?
Question:am buying my first home and looking at different blinds. I am in an area that has hot summers and cold winters. My home builder isn't known for the best quality insulation. Should I get really good insulated blinds for the windows? Does it really make a difference? I am looking at either wooden blinds or good inslulated ones.

Yeah it makes a difference...a big one....I would go insulated..also, solar screens on the outside or on the inside will help tremendously during the summer months!
If you do the roll type solar screens on the inside you wont have to worry about blinds either!
Best of Luck!
Tell your builder you want X type of insulation, period. I hope you have a white roof? Or at least light colored. Black is very hot. You can have an attic fan put in and that will help with the heat. We use an a/c only in our bedroom. I find people who have total a/c really can't handle the heat at all. So we suffer all day and then at night we can sleep. As far as plain ole plastic blinds keep them closed all day during the summer all around the house and altho the sun will move it won't get the house hot and humid, at least not as much. We have hot summers and cold winters as well. I have vinyl everywhere. I am surprised your lender hasn't specified certain things for the house, like insulation. Call the gas co. and they will tell you what kind you need for your area, either that or phone a Lowe's or other home store.
Hello Jonathon. You don't need insulated blinds for windows. You are covering glass, because glass loses heat. But wooden blinds are not much better. All the rage at moment, but get dusty and look heavy in some areas. So long as you cover windows you can use-Roller,Roman, or special blinds. Have you tried Martha Stewart site-type in blinds? There is a neat blind on sale here in New Zealand, which is transparent, but dense enough to keep heat in. It's great in areas which have bright sun. Lets light in-keeps glare out. Good Luck!
I know that in the summer having blinds up and closed definitely helps--it does not let the sun in but it is definitely cooler in any house---In winter that stuff they put around the windows can help you a lot but I don't know about if the blinds would help in the winter.
