Which is a good sewing machine to purchase for a beginner?
Question:I would like to learn to sew some simple projects like pillows and chair cushions and also do some mending. Is there a brand or type of machine that you can recommend? Any that should be avoided? I would also like suggestions for a good book about sewing for beginners-Thanks!

I have a brother sewing machine I bought at Walmart it was in-expensive and it works great. If I was you I would take a sewing class for beginners!! Hobby shops and fabric stores often have them, because they eventually want your business. I know the little quilt shops all offer them too. Im a beginner but I have lots of fun with sewing...I pin everything and keep checking both sides...in and out...to make sure it is going to look like I want it to before I start sewing hehe!! The library has great how to books for beginners...its a nice way to try out a simple project without spending $50 on a book...you can always photocopy the project at the library too.
my first sewing machine was a used one. i bought it for $5 at a garage sale. I have been sewing for about 1 year now and decided to buy a new one. the best way is to buy a used one for little money and try it out before you buy an expensive one and then you won't like it. try out craigslist.com many people list their old machines on there. i just bought a second used one, an old singer machine that is just great. good luck
any brand name is good. Kenmore has been around and good products. For a beginner you dont need all the fancy gadgets unless you plan on taking classes for their use. but just go and check out the basic sewing machine.
I like the Dummies books. Check out Sewing for Dummies, but I would say if you can find a learning inexpensive class, that will be best for the hands on guidence I know you will need and benefit from. Sometimes your local parks or city programs have classes like that. Or find an older person who sews to show you.
i have a "Brother". very in expensive and sews fine!

I have to agree with everything already said! The library is a great resource for beginner's books. Kenmore, Singer, and Brother all make decent sewing machines. I would definitely get a simple model without too many bells and whistles, or 101 different stitches, to start. A sewing class would be helpful to aswer your questions. I got my current machine at a sewing machine repair and sales place. It had been a trade-in on a new machine, and I got for a fraction of the price it cost new, but it seemed like new. There are tons of books and magazines at book stores and hobby stores. Have fun!
