Can i put new formica top over an existing formica top?

Question:i want to cover over by putting a new top on the old one. i tried to pull up the old formica but it pulled up the wood under it.

Answers:
You could try, but I dont recommend it. If you want to change the top, you need to change the whole thing. It's not difficult or terribly expensive. Use the old countertop to make a pattern for the new one.

I have done this before, but before installing new laminate I put down a layer of Luan (1/4" plywood) using 1 1/2" ring shank nails, making sure that they are slightly sunken and then filled with a good floor leveling product and sanded flush. Then just apply laminate as usual.
I have seen it done without the layer of plywood and the laminate was bubbling.
You don't have to replace the entire top as someone else said.
