How do i get my sponges and my sink disposal not to stink?
Question:no matter what i do after once or twice of use they reak!
Answers:
Baking soda down the sink. Sponges must be washed thoroughly because they hold bacteria ( that's what your smelling)
Pout 1 cup salt and 1 cup vinegar down the drain with 3 cups boiling water. Allow to set for an hour, then flush with cold water. This will not only clean the disposal, but it will also clean out the drain. Do this once a week.
Also, you can throw a chopped up lemon in the disposal.
Either wash your sponges in the dishwasher or in the washing machine. Air dry, and do this weekly also.
I put my sponges in the dishwasher. I also put them in the microwave for about 3-5 minutes I rinse them a few times and put them in damp... You can also toss them in the washing machine with towels.. I use a sponge for about 2-3 months this way and I dont' have a "stinky" problem... I also put coffee grounds in the disposal and once a month I run bleach through the drains...
Put a damp sponge in the microwave or 1 minute. This will kill the bacteria. For a disposal, pour some bleach in there and make sure all the food has gone down.
If that doesn't help, there might be something wrong with your pipes, like they are not draining properly.
through the sponges away. they hold a lot of bacteria, no matter how often you 'wash' them. use a rag instead and wash it every couple of days.
try running some lemon and/or orange rinds down the garbage disposal. should help with the smell and the citric acid helps kill any malodorous things crawling around down there.
Never use sponges, the reak with some of the worst germs on the planet. The disposal? grind a lemon.
Pour some baking soda down the drain, follow with a cup of vinegar (it will bubble up). This will clean the drain. You can also leave the sponge in the sink while you do it, and then, put the sponge in the dishwasher whenever you run it. It'll stay fresh and clean.
Make sure to rinse your sponges well after each use. Squeeze out any excess water and sit upright to dry. Also after each use you can wet the sponge, sqeeze out excess water and put in hte microwave for 2 minutes on high, this will kill the germs on the sponge.
For the garbage disposal, put in a lemon wedge. Turn on the disposal. Lemon is a great degreaser and deodorizer.
for your garbage disposal, they sell cleaners likeDispose away. It comes in a packet and you stick it in grind it up and it foams and cleans. If you want somehing in between try baking soda nad vinegar. Pour baking soda down the drain then pour in vinegar, it will foam up and clean the garbage diposal. Plus, it is really cheap.
Make sure you never grind lemon or ice in your garbage diposal. If any pieces of the rind get stuck in your disposal they will begin to mold and stink up your entire kitchen. Ice will simply dull your blades. It is an old wives tale that they sharpen blades.
for your sponge, make sure that at night you ring all the water out of it so it has time to dry. Also if you use antibacterial dish soap it should keep any germs from living in your sponge, the bacteria are the things causing it to smell. Make sure no food is sticking to your sponge when you leave it next to your sink. This also will cause it to smell. Hope this helps.
Essentially, the odors are caused by food particles that are not being rinsed away. There are a number of ways you can address this. One is to regularly put ice in the unit to break away any residual food particles. To attack the odors, baking soda is known to help, as are coffee grounds. With regards to your sponge, I suggest soaking it once a week in baking soda and water for an hour or so.
put wet sponges in the mocrowave to kill germs... orange peels in the garbage disposal
Use Lemons in the Disposal
toss the sponges more often.or soak them in bleach
Run your sponges through the dishwasher, baking soda followed by a little white vinegar down the disposal (fizz is normal)
Just pour alittle pinesol down the drain -- (also put egg shells or coffee grounds down the disposal once in awhile to help clean) and zap your sponge (wet) in the microwave - that kills the germs that cause the smell
SPONGES: run them thru the dishwasher or the washing machine. Air dry in dish rack.
Wash out with soap and water, rinse out, and air dry every not to prevent smell.
DISPOSAL:
every day, run hot water after putting stuff in disposal - don't let anything, even sludge [ miscellaneous tiny particles ]
accumulate in there. Run disposal every night after kitchen cleanup.
Stinky - [ rinse with water after all of these ]
run baking soda thru it
run vinegar thru it [ not same time as baking soda ]
run lemon rinds/peels thru it
You can by fresheners for your disposal at housewears stores.
Sponges harbor bacteria which causes foul smells. Wash your sponges in hot water w/ bleach and air dry. Best choice is to get rid of them and use dish rags. Easier to keep clean. For disposal, I like to run with a bit of Lysol Cleaner, or you can grind up orange peels to refresh.
I would throw the sponges away. You aren't supposed to use them more then a month anyways. Washing them in hot water and bleach in the washing machine if they start to smell and you want to keep them.
Put lemons down the disposal and grind them up that will make the sink smell great
