Ice or try peanut butter. it works on hair, dont know about carpets. goo gone maybe.
ice...freeze it till you can scrape it off, or pick it off.
get an ice cube and hold it against the gum. It should harden and then you can easily pick it off.

I agree with the ice thing, my mom used to use ice to get gum out of my hair when I was little.
Try soaking it in "Goo Gone". It might take a few times, and you might wanna try it in an inconspicuous spot first to make sure it doesn't fade your carpet. You can buy it at Walmart in the cleaning section.
Also, try freezing it with ice, then scraping it bit by bit...but that may take longer.
Rub an ice cube over it. It'll hard the gum and presto a clean carpet. Works for gum in hair too.
My Solution is hire somebody else who wants money ! Or if your enthusiastic you can use butter to get rid of the gum or you can use Margarine ! Both work !
This sounds gross but get a big glop of peanut butter and spread it around and all over the gum. The oils help release it. THen wipe away as much peanust butter you can with a dry cloth and then it will be easier to clean the carpet conventionally with cleaner spray or something. Scrub clean, let dry, and voila!

Try lighter fluid. It works. Back when everyone was smoking, and everyone was using refillable lighters, it's what my family used for all kinds of things like that. It should come right out with a little elbow grease. lol

Just continue rubbing peanut butter in the glob of gum...it will break the gum down and your left with a lil peanut butter stain that any cleaner should clean up.
Alternate ice, peanut butter and then ice. Keep doing this until the gum is removed.
