Cleaning a bed of urine?
Question:So I let my friend and her puppy come over and play in my apartment a few months ago- we lost track of the puppy and found out that she had peed on my bed. Lovely! I cleaned it with some pet stain cleaner, and then because the smell was still there some of that "urine be gone" a cleaner at CVS. Now months later (and much more hot and humid weather) my bed smells again! What else should I or can I try?
Answers:
Since the smell is the only issue at this point and the urine obviously soaked through the mattress, I would sprinkle baking soda on the box frame and flip the mattress so the area that was peed on is on top of the baking soda. You could even sprinkle a little baking soda on the top side of the mattress then cover it with a mattress pad and the sheets. Baking soda seems simple but it did wonders for some of our pet odor issues.
You could try FEBREZE
have you tried baking soda?
I dont know how well it will work now.. but I have had puppied piddle in my bed. I would pour baking soda on the stain and let it sit till it dried up, sometimes placing a towel over it to help blot it up. I have never had a problem with re-ocurring odor.
They make some odor remover for pets you can pick up at petsmart... my mom had to use GALLONS of it in a renatl house that was trashed... ogt teh smell out but it was costly.
Try renting a rug cleaner from home depot and use the pet stain remover again with the upholstery attachments and very hot water and just suck the water out really good and spray it down with fabreeze.
Call the carpet cleaners in your area until you find one that will clean your mattress. They will use a truck mounted (be sure they have a truck mount! The portable ones do not have enough suction to remove the water that is applied and you then end up with a whole new problem!) hot water extraction cleaner to clean the mattress, then apply a professional enzyme product that will remove any urine left in the mattress.
As you have found out, without removing the cause of the odor (the urine), it will only keep coming back.
Short of replacing the mattress, this is the best solution.
Nature's Miracle (red and white bottle) from Petsmart. You douse it completely, and while it dries, it will remove all traces of the smell. My dog peed on my son mattress, and we are in humid Texas, and the smell has never returned. But you have to make sure you cover the entire stain, all the way down.
Things like Febreeze only cover it up for a while, but do nothing of eliminating it at it's source.
Good luck.

Hope this helps!
Personally, I wouldn't use Febreeze. It would just make a flowery/urine odor. I am the proud owner of a cat who doesn't like to use her litter box (lucky me).
I SWEAR by Petzyme (PetSmart) and sprinkle baking soda on area (after carpet is dry) and then put a bowl of vinegar in the room. Vinegar absorbs odor.
When you buy it, buy at least four bottles. It goes fast.
