Depending on the kind of clutter, depends on the solution. I am also a online student and I tend to print off papers to keep. Sometimes it gets pretty messy. I invested in a small filing cabinet and files. It helps me with paper clutter. I also go thru the papers periodically and get rid of what I don't need any more. You can always get under the bed storage for shoes and clothes. Baskets are also a good solution. They are great to put on shelves to store stuff in.
You have to make the resolution to become organized. Old habits are hard to break. You have to start by picking up afer yourself immediately and cleaning up after yourself immediately. Don't lay something down and think you will get to it later because you won't. If you take it out..put it away. If you dirty it up, clean it up. Get in the habit of picking up after yourself immediately and then cleaning won't gang up on you all of a sudden and become overwhelming. Do a thorough cleaning once a week.that's a deep down cleaning of the whole place and then do constant, pick-up, straigtening cleaning throughout the week. Cleaning is a never ending process and can't be put off until another time or it becomes too much and then you won't bother anymore. Good luck and get "cracking."
Do you have any friends that are hyper organized? I have one that is going to help me get ready for my fiance to move in with me. My problem is, I get started, then get side tracked and leave the start of a clean up job which turns into an even bigger clean up than it started. You have to do one project at a time. Start small, like your desk then work outward. It might take a while but once you start, spend 15 minutes a day keeping the area cleaned up.
good luck with that
Baby steps. Bad habits are hard to break. Start with something small, like always putting your shoes away, or always hanging up your clothes or putting them in the hamper. If you tend to pile up stuff on a surface, like mail on the kitchen counter, make a concerted effort to keep that surface clean. Throw away junk mail as soon as you take it out fo the mailbox. Always file away bills right after you pay them. Before you go to be at night, make sure the living room is picked up. I'm not saying to do all of these things to start with. Just pick something and be consistent, and try to change your habits a little at a time. Make some rules for yourself such as not going to sleep with dirty dishes in the sink. It's easier to keep your home clean and tidy than it is to make a mess of it all week long and clean up on the weekends. When you do laundry, make sure you do a whole load from start to finish. Wash, dry, fold and put away. Don't wash a load and then leave it in the washing machine for 2 days.
The flylady website is good, but a lot of people get annoyed by the constant emails. It's geared towards stay at home moms and wives, but you could find practical advice there.
Good luck. Having a tidy house makes life more peaceful. I can't come home from work and enjoy a glass of wine or watching a movie with my husband if the house is a wreck. Coming home to a clean home is very satisfying.
Make drawers, label them, take a bin and put all your junk in there. Dont break the habit of putting everything back in its place. Pretend you are at a friends house that is super clean and you dont want to mess things up. Also, take a day outta the week and make that the day of cleaning, that way you know which day to set aside.
