Use some White Vinegar and scrub with a stiff brush, then fill the resevoir with water conditioner to retard the lime, Vinegar will only have an odor for a few minutes then dissipate, vinegar is natural and can be used as an all purpose cleaner/degreaser, use it on many surfaces vinegar will also clean a humidifier without harmful fumes.
