Why do towels, even after being washed, still have a mildewy odor once they get wet again?

Question:

Answers:
Because you must have let them be wet for too long. Hang up your towel after the shower and don't let the load of towels sit in the washer too long. Re-wash your towel with a little bit of bleach to KILL the mildew. Gross.

You're not letting them fully dry.
mine do it too.. i think its cuz theyre old..
they dont unless maybe your not washing them properly.
Mine don't, try using Tide
Mildew lives in wet. Washing doesn't really ruin their day. You have to use bleach or other substance to kill it in the wash water.
Use clorox 2 or plain bleach
My towels never smelled like that, maybe its time to buy new ones. Are you hanging up the towels so they dry properly after using them?
put a little bit of pinsol in with the towels next time u wash them
its the humid climate. doesnt dry fast enough
cuz u might not be fully dry, when u put them away. also, there too old.
btw, mine dont smell like that. so use tide with bleach and some fabric softener.
you are leaving them in the washer to long before you dry them which makes them sour. Put your stinky towels in the wash with a small cap full of pine sol and after washing immediately dry all the way.
what u need to do is put some some bleach in your washer let them dry all the way in the dryer and when your done using the towel hang it up so the whole towl can dry
Because you have either left them in the wash machine to long or you have not dried them all the way before putting them away. I always add a little extra fabric softner to my loads with towels, and I always make sure that my towels are completely dry before putting them away.
I have this problem from time to time also. Sounds like you might be washing too many at a time, letting them sit in the washer too long before they go into the dryer or they aren't drying all the way before you take them out of the dryer. Try adjusting the size of your wash load. If that doesn't work, make sure you get them out of the washer and into the dryer right away. If that still doesn't work, make sure you set the dryer on a long enough cycle so that they are completely dry the first time. You do not need to get new towels or use special cleaners. Just slightly change the way you do your laundry. Good luck!
Chlorine BLEACH kills mildew (1/2 cup) ^^^ simple soap and water doesn't.
Wash with white vinegar. After use make sure there dry before putting in hamper.
I know I don't understand it either.
Like the others have said : Use smaller loads, use bleach or bleach for colors.

I'll add : wash in the hottest water possible and add a little pine sol to the final rinse.
They will smell lovely.Just make sure not to let them sit wet for any amount of time.

Good luck
My towels have just recently started smelling like that also. I have been washing clothes for quite a while and have never encountered this before. I use tide with bleach and put them in the dryer immediately. Do you think my washer could be causing the smell? It is about 10 years old.
