Will vinager stop a fabric from bleeding?
Question:It is an Indian cotton bed cover (from India). My friend bought the same one and washed it right away. She said all the nice bright colors went dull and was no longer so appealing to the eye. She washed in cold water with only fabric softener.
Answers:
Actually a cup of table salt diluted in hot water then added to the laundry in the washing machine will set colors and prevent most from transferring or bleeding. This works on most fabrics and dyes, but there will be some that nothing will work on.
Addition: Depending on the fabric content, if it is hot water safe, go that way. If you dissolve the salt in hot water then add it to the laundry if you must use cold water, it should also work but may not be quite as effective.
Since it is vintage- I would not use HOT water. Yes- the salt sets the color- but I would try it in cold water first. Most items tend to bleed more with hot water.
thought it was salt myself
