Get the cheapest shampoo you can find. Apply it on a wet cloth or sponge (I like a textured one that won't scratch). Works great, smells good, and you don't have to ventilate! Be at peace with your tub!

get scrubbing bubbles spray it on ,let sit for a while. wash off. If it is really thick on there ,then you need a scrub brush and use some comet cleaner and get the muscles working to get the scum off.
I wet the tub, sprinkle in the Comet, and sponge it onto the tub surface. Allow it to sit a few minutes, then use a green scrubbie to remove the dirt. It comes right off.

I cleaned my bathtub just a few days ago - What worked for me was metal wool (scourer) but use rubber gloves as it might hurt your hands and basic home brand cream cleanser. I was going to buy the fancy expensive stuff but then thought I'd give the cheaper stuff a go - come off so quickly and easily!
Seriously if its scum that won't come off with just a washcloth, use metal wool - it really worked for me!
I'm a bath cleaning fanatic!! I love a clean bathroom (the rest of the house can wait) but I'm not particularly fond of chemicals and bleach both for myself and the environment. The absolute best cleaner - even giving commercial ones a run for their money - is bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar. Sprinkle the bicarb over the really grimy bits, then with a sponge wet with vinegar, rub it off...I sometimes put lemon oil in the vinegar to make it smell nice! This mixture can be used on most kitchen and bathroom surfaces without scratching and without harm to your family or the earth.

If you want to go totally "home made" I'd go with baking soda. Sprinkle baking soda on to a damp sponge and apply a thin layer to your tub. Then put distilled vinegar into a spray bottle and spray over the baking soda. This will give you home made scrubbing bubbles. Repeat as needed.
Brake-Kleen this stuff is the wonder cleaner of all times, no scrubbing, no waiting, no hassle, just spray on then spray again and its clean.
BUT! be very careful, I implore you to wear eye protection, DO NOT get it in your eyes ( i know, i did and you want to die from the burning, trust me) and ventalate WELL! its toxic.
and read the label, i use it on my carpets, tub, oven, filters and metal whatevers.you buy it at a autoparts store usually and it cant be used on some things so check the label once again.
