How do I get the mildew smell out of my towels?
Question:My husband tryed to help with laundry and put a load of towels in the washer, and of course he forgot they were there and didn't tell me. I found them when I went to do laundry a coupledays later. And now they have this discusting mildew smell to them. I've washed them several times now and can't get rid of the smell. I use tide. What else can I do to get ride of the smell? Please any help would be greatly appreciated!
Answers:
Wash them again in warm water with 1 cup of baking soda in addition to your soap. That should rid your towels of the smell. Also, try splitting the load into half the size that you would normally do. Rinse them twice before putting in the dryer.

Try some bleach when washing them. If that doesn't work, throw them away and buy new ones. That will definitely work. :)

Wash in hot water and use baking soda or vinegar in the rinse cycle. Use the extra rinse cycle to make sure all the soap and vinegar is gone.
Launder them in hot water with your Tide and 1 cup of Javex. Add the Javex to the hot water and let it mix well before putting the towels in it.
If possible, dry them well outdoors in the fresh air. This should work.
I know that story all too well.. only at my house.. if you leave towels in the dryer and it is humid outside.. the towels get damp and that smell sets in.. first I would make sure that everyone in the house knows that if they start laundry they must finish it quickly.. help is nice, but not when you have to redo stuff all the time.. thanks anyways right... now.. I buy a product called OdoBan from Sam's club, I pour a little in the wash loads just like I would bleach. this always works for me... it even gets pet urine smell out of clothes. I had a male cat once that had sprayed one of my kids comforters.. I thought for sure that it was going to have to go in the trash... I used the odoban and the smell was gone. You can also add some to your carpet cleaner and freshen your carpets... Look this stuff up it has multiple uses and kills bacteria and viruses. You may also want to rewash one more time after using this product... but so far, in the last 10 years.. I have yet to have any skin irritations from it. Hope this helps.
If your towles are white you can use bleach and that should get rid of the smell. If they arn't white I'd use oxi clean and some baking soda. Baking soda is a natural odor elimator. I use half a cup of baking soda to a load of laundry.
I agree with the vinegar or baking soda. Vinegar has always worked very well for me!
Rewash them in very small loads. Use vinegar to rinse should help.
This has happened to me several times. I rewash the towels using my usual Tide detergent, but I use "hot" water instead. I then put them promptly into the dryer with a fragrant dryer sheet when they are done washing.
Buy new towels!
